Ghana loses over US$3 billion annually to corruption

Ghana loses more than US$3 billion annually to corruption, according to Samuel Asare Akuamoah of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE). He noted that these lost resources could otherwise be utilized for infrastructure, job creation, and essential services.

Transparency International Ghana reported stagnant performance on the Corruption Perceptions Index between 2020 and 2024, suggesting insufficient progress in addressing the issue despite existing constitutional frameworks.

Data from the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) reveals that 94.2 percent of citizens who experience bribery do not report it. This low reporting rate is attributed to fears of retaliation, such as job loss or physical threats, and a lack of confidence that complaints will lead to meaningful action. Additionally, the GACC reported that 14.3 percent of respondents admitted to giving money or gifts to public officials to access government services, a figure that has declined from 18 percent in previous assessments.
