Ghana Manganese Company plans local refinery and port concession
Ghana Manganese Company (GMC) is pursuing a strategic investment plan to establish a local manganese refinery, aiming to increase value addition within the country’s extractive sector. Managing Director Sun Yuanwei stated that the refinery would upgrade raw 26.5% manganese ore into high-value products with concentrations exceeding 40%, thereby boosting national revenue and creating high-skilled employment.
To support its expanding mining footprint, GMC is also engaging with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to secure a concession at Takoradi Port. This arrangement would facilitate the importation of heavy mining equipment and provide a dedicated terminal for exporting refined ores.
Additionally, the company is working with the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) to revive railway services linking mining communities like Tarkwa to coastal outlets. Restoring this rail network is intended to reduce vehicular congestion and prevent road degradation caused by heavy-duty haulage trucks.
