On August 6, 2025 a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, killing eight people, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, former Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Samuel Sarpong, former NDC parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three service members.

A National Interfaith Memorial Service was held on August 6, 2026 at the Kofi Ohene‑Konadu Auditorium in Accra. President John Dramani Mahama led the ceremony, joined by Vice‑President Professor Jane Naana Opoku‑Agyemang, ministers, MPs, traditional leaders, diplomats and the victims' families. Mahama urged the nation to remember the eight “fallen patriots”, to learn lessons on safety and institutional strength, and pledged continued support for the bereaved families. The Lands Minister also paid tribute, describing the victims as patriots and emphasizing the importance of national remembrance.
