Ghana Medical Association holds wellness walk in Kumasi

Hundreds of healthcare professionals, government officials, and fitness enthusiasts participated in the 2026 Ghana Medical Association (GMA) Ashanti Division Wellness Walk in Kumasi. The 10-kilometre event began at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to promote healthy living and combat the rising prevalence of lifestyle-related non-communicable diseases.

Leaders, including GMA President Professor Ernest Yorke and Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, highlighted the increasing burden of conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases on the healthcare system. The initiative emphasized that regular physical activity and healthy eating are essential preventive tools.

The walk aimed to encourage medical professionals to serve as role models for the public by adopting healthy lifestyles despite the high-stress nature of their work. Organizers intend to make the wellness walk an annual flagship event to expand public engagement in disease prevention.
