Ghana Medical Trust Fund sponsors first public brain aneurysm surgeries

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has reached a milestone by sponsoring the first cohort of brain aneurysm coiling surgeries at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. One year after its establishment, the fund has provided full public coverage for six patients undergoing this specialized procedure, which typically costs between US$15,000 and US$20,000.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Hadi Mohammed Abdallah noted that the fund has also supported treatments for brain tumors, including pituitary tumors that risk causing blindness or death if left untreated. Previously, the high cost of these procedures often forced patients to endure long delays while attempting to raise funds, increasing the risk of fatal ruptures or permanent disability.
