Ghana mining sector faces illegal miner clash and lease renewal controversy

Global Ore (Ghana) Ore Industries Ltd has asked the traditional leaders of the Wassa Fiase Paramountcy to help remove illegal "galamsey" miners from its Abosso Bompieso gold concession in the Western Region. The company, which obtained a 17‑year lease in December 2024, says the presence of illegal miners blocks access to the site where it plans to start processing about 300 tonnes of ore per day, eventually scaling to 5,000 tonnes. It also announced community‑focused employment and social‑responsibility programmes.

At the same time, the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has called on the Ghanaian government to deny Gold Fields Ghana Ltd’s request to renew its mining lease for the Tarkwa mine, arguing the concession should be transferred to a local owner. Critics say the IEA’s stance conflicts with recent investment‑promotion reforms that lower the capital threshold for foreign firms and could undermine the local businesses that have grown around large‑scale mining operations. The debate highlights tensions between resource nationalism and the practicalities of operating a world‑class gold mine.

Both issues underscore the challenges Ghana faces in balancing community interests, illegal mining pressures, and foreign investment policies within its vital mining sector.
