Ghana moves to shift Gold Fields' Tarkwa mine to local ownership

Ghana is evaluating whether to transfer control of the Gold Fields Tarkwa gold mine to domestic firms when the current leases expire next April. The move is part of a broader strategy to capture a larger share of gold revenue, with royalties raised to as much as 12% and new bids limited to Ghanaian companies. The Tarkwa operation, which produced about 475,000 ounces of gold last year and represented roughly one‑fifth of Gold Fields' total output, has submitted an early application for lease renewal, while authorities also consider a possible lease extension.

If handed over, the government expects the deal to generate additional opportunities for local engineers, suppliers, and contractors, and to promote environmental rehabilitation, job creation, and infrastructure development. Critics, including the Institute of Economic Affairs, warn that denying the renewal could disrupt an ecosystem that already supports many Ghanaian firms—such as Engineers and Planners, ZEN Petroleum Holdings, Western Transport Services, and Genser Energy—who depend on the mine’s procurement, tax contributions, and community programs. The debate centers on balancing increased national benefit with the risk of deterring future investment in Ghana’s mining sector.
