Ghana Opposition MPs Question Government Spending, Policy and Transparency
Former Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah told parliament that about GH¢30 billion worth of projects had not been executed halfway through the year, criticizing the Mid‑Year Budget Review for lacking details on programme delivery.
Oforikrom MP Michael Kwasi Aidoo called the government’s 24‑hour economy policy “propaganda”, saying it had no realistic budget allocation of GH¢4 billion and that the administration was now promoting 24‑hour markets instead of the original policy.
The Minority Caucus, represented by Kwaku Ampratwum‑Sarpong, accused the Mahama administration of a secret plan to “capture” the state‑owned Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) through a so‑called strategic equity capitalisation, demanding seven transparency measures after VALCO reported a $3.19 million profit in the first half of 2026.
Okaikwei Central MP Patrick Yaw Boamah challenged Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson on procurement reforms, alleging that a US$250 million road project and other works such as a military barracks and a specialist hospital were awarded by single‑source or restricted tender despite announced reforms.
The Minority also announced it will invoke Ghana’s Right‑to‑Information Act to obtain the full texts of three tax‑administration agreements approved on 28 July 2026 covering a Fiscal Electronic Device policy, a domestic revenue collection platform and a cross‑border e‑commerce VAT monitoring system, citing a lack of scrutiny before approval.
