Ghana National Fire Service warns of risks after viral truck cooking video

A viral video showing a truck driver’s mate cooking jollof rice inside a moving DAF XF 95 truck has raised significant road safety and fire hazard concerns in Ghana. The footage depicts the individual using a gas cylinder and cooking utensils while the vehicle is in motion.

Alex King Nartey, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has responded to the video by highlighting the extreme dangers of such practices. He noted that firefighters frequently encounter LPG cylinders and cooking equipment inside commercial vehicles, sometimes in quantities sufficient to operate a small food stall.

Nartey warned that combining an active flame from an LPG cylinder with combustible materials like fuel and engine oil inside a moving vehicle creates a high risk of fire or explosion. This practice endangers the occupants, other road users, and emergency responders. The incident has prompted calls for stricter vehicle safety checks and better adherence to fire safety protocols among commercial transport operators.
