Ghana National Security dismantles major counterfeit currency networks

The National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) has dismantled four major counterfeit currency printing hubs and arrested 16 suspects, including both Ghanaian and foreign nationals. The operations, conducted through six coordinated raids between June 12 and July 24, 2026, targeted networks using religious buildings and traditional spiritual centers to mask illegal activities.

Security agencies recovered finished counterfeit notes totaling US$543,000, GH¢196,600, and CFA 60,000. Additionally, investigators seized a massive stock of unprocessed currency coupons valued at approximately US$5,293,500, GH¢19,553,700, and CFA 623,550,000. Other seized items included four printing machines, six vehicles, two motorcycles, and fake gold bars.

The suspects have been handed over to the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) for forensic examination. Case dockets have been submitted to the Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice, with prosecution proceedings currently underway at the Accra High Court.
