Ghana NCC Chief Links Flood Crisis to Declining Cultural Values
Wakefield Ackuaku, Executive Director of Ghana's National Commission on Culture, said the country's recurring floods are largely caused by a loss of cultural values. He explained that indiscriminate dumping of waste, poor sanitation and a general disregard for the environment reflect a departure from traditional community discipline that once protected ecosystems.
Ackuaku urged Ghanaians to revive communal practices and respect for traditional authority, arguing that cultural norms can guide better environmental stewardship. His comments support the newly launched Ghana Cultural Policy, which links cultural beliefs and traditional knowledge to environmental sustainability and calls for greater community involvement in conservation.
The remarks highlight a broader view that addressing flood risks requires both infrastructural measures and a cultural shift toward responsible behavior toward nature.
