Ghana NDC leaders and commentators debate term limits and candidate suitability
Internal discussions within Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) have surfaced regarding constitutional amendments and the quality of future leadership.
NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has cautioned against efforts to amend the 1992 Constitution to extend presidential term limits for John Dramani Mahama. Nketiah argued that any change to the two-term ceiling would apply to all leaders, potentially allowing former President Nana Akufo-Addo to contest again. He stated that Ghana should not amend laws specifically for a single individual.
Separately, veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr has questioned the suitability of certain NDC presidential aspirants. Pratt expressed concerns regarding the character, judgment, and communication styles of some candidates. He also criticized the practice of political appointments, suggesting that some officials are selected to balance political equations rather than based on merit.
