Ghana NDPC reviews population data integration for 2026–2029 development plans

The National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) has launched a technical review of selected 2026–2029 Medium-Term Development Plans (MTDPs) in Accra. The initiative aims to strengthen how population variables are integrated into national and local development policies to ensure they reflect Ghana’s current demographic realities.

NDPC Director-General Audrey Smock Amoah emphasized that development plans must move beyond mere preparation to achieve tangible results for citizens. She noted that factors such as population growth, age structure, fertility, mortality, migration, and spatial distribution are critical for the effective provision of infrastructure, social services, and employment opportunities.

The National Population Council stated that this review is the first major update to the country’s population integration models in over a decade. The process will utilize data from the 2021 Population and Housing Census to ensure that demographic evidence is effectively translated into decision-making at the local and district levels. The assessment is being conducted jointly by the NDPC and the National Population Council, with participation from various ministries, departments, agencies, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
