Ghana NHIA warns providers against illegal fees after GH¢2.325bn disbursement
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has issued a warning to credentialed healthcare facilities to stop charging members unauthorized fees for services covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) benefit package. The Authority reported that some facilities have been compelling patients, including vulnerable individuals, to pay extra for medicines and procedures that the NHIA is responsible for reimbursing.
To address provider concerns, the NHIA has implemented upward tariff adjustments of approximately 50 percent. In October 2026, the Authority disbursed GH¢210.36 million to public, private, and mission healthcare facilities. This brings the total claims payments for the year to GH¢2.325 billion.
Facilities found imposing unauthorized charges face sanctions, including the recovery of funds, suspension or termination of credentialing, and potential referral to law enforcement. The NHIA urged members to report any instances where they are confronted with unlawful financial demands.
