Ghana NPP Chairman Wontumi seeks plea deal in Exim Bank case

Bernard Antwi‑Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is pursuing plea negotiations in a trial linked to an Exim Bank loan obtained for a large‑scale agricultural venture. The loan financed a 10,000‑acre maize farm in the Sekyere Central District, a project that earned him the Ashanti Regional Best Farmer award in 2018.

Wontumi’s decision to negotiate a legal settlement is presented as a commitment to the rule of law and transparency, and the plea deal does not constitute proof of guilt. The development was discussed on a news programme that examined its political and governance implications alongside other current issues.

The chairman stresses that resolving the commercial and legal matter through negotiation avoids prolonged litigation and allows him to continue contributing to Ghana’s agricultural development.
