Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Paul Afoko told JoyNews that his removal in 2015 was caused by internal factionalism and that he now aims to heal divisions and unite the party. He cited the Chinese Communist Party as an example of how factions can coexist when they work together.

In a separate development, National Democratic Congress (NDC) chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah welcomed the Accra High Court's July 20, 2026 verdict that sentenced NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, to 20 years in prison with hard labour for illegal mining and related offences. Nketiah said the ruling weakens the NPP’s leadership prospects ahead of future elections.
