Ghana offers free rabies vaccinations for 25,000 pets
Ghana's Veterinary Services Department is conducting a nationwide campaign to provide free rabies vaccinations for 25,000 dogs and cats in high-risk areas throughout September 2026. The initiative, themed ‘Stronger Together’, is part of World Rabies Month and aligns with the country's goal to eliminate human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030.
Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Emmanuel Allegye-Cudjoe noted that while rabies is nearly 100 per cent fatal once symptoms appear, it is entirely preventable through pet vaccination. He urged owners to vaccinate their animals annually and to report any animal bites or scratches to health facilities immediately. Following the conclusion of the free period at the end of the month, a prescribed fee will be required for the vaccinations.
The department also plans to expand public education efforts using schools, religious institutions, and media platforms, providing information in local languages including Twi, Ga, Ewe, and Hausa.
