Ghana One Million Coders Programme faces low completion rates

Ghana’s One Million Coders Programme (OMCP) has reached 140,000 registrants, but current data shows a significant gap in completion rates. According to Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George, only approximately 10,000 participants—roughly 7%—have finished a course.

To address this shortfall and meet the four-year goal of training one million Ghanaians, the government is integrating the programme into the formal education system. Agreements have been signed with 12 universities, with negotiations ongoing for 10 more. Institutions such as the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have already made the programme a required course for first-year students. The minister expects these university partnerships to contribute nearly 100,000 participants.

In addition to educational initiatives, officials recently conducted inspections of digital infrastructure in the Eastern Region, including the Koforidua Regional Innovation Centre. The monitoring exercise highlighted the need for improved rural telephony and connectivity to support digital skills development outside major urban centers.
