Ghana Parliament to implement biometric attendance and electronic voting

Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has announced that Ghana’s Parliament will fully introduce a biometric attendance system to replace the traditional manual paper register. The move aims to enhance accountability, transparency, and discipline by providing accurate and verifiable records of Members of Parliament (MPs). Currently, 258 out of 276 MPs have completed the registration process.

As part of these technological upgrades, the Parliamentary Service is also preparing to pilot an electronic voting system designed to reduce manual errors and increase operational efficiency. Additionally, the Speaker directed that every MP be assigned a specific seat in the Chamber. Under this new rule, legislators sitting outside their designated positions will not be permitted to speak or have their contributions recognized during proceedings.

The upcoming parliamentary session will also focus heavily on the scrutiny of the Government’s 2027 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, a process expected to last approximately eight weeks.
