Ghana law enforcement conducts major arrests in shooting and cybercrime operations

Ghana is conducting several high-profile law enforcement operations targeting violent crime and cybercrime. In Accra, General Sergeant Mathew Aboase of the Madina Police Station was arrested after a confrontation with members of the Ritz Junction Taxi Drivers Union. During the altercation, the officer’s service weapon allegedly discharged accidentally, injuring two bystanders, Doe Asinyo and Gifty Nyimahen.

Simultaneously, the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has arrested and remanded over 10 suspected kingpins behind scam centre operations. Investigators have seized electronic devices, including laptops and phones, for forensic analysis to dismantle wider criminal networks. This crackdown follows international efforts, such as the FBI’s Operation Blackout, to target transnational fraud.

In a coordinated effort between Ghanaian and Nigerian authorities, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has repatriated 105 Nigerians rescued from cybercrime syndicates in Ghana. While 119 individuals were rescued in total, 14 remain in processing.

Additionally, in the Bono Region, police arrested eight suspects for allegedly assaulting a 21-year-old man, Godstime Umukoro, as part of an initiation ritual into an internet fraud operation. The group reportedly used stolen images of military personnel to impersonate soldiers in Yemen to defraud victims.
