Ghana police arrest suspect in GH¢1.1m fake gold scam

The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested 36-year-old Gyamfi Christian in connection with a fake gold scam in Ghana. The arrest follows an investigation into a complaint by gold aggregator Christopher Awuni, who reported being defrauded of GH¢1.1 million in July 2026.

Awuni alleged that four men posing as gold sellers sold him 110 troy ounces of gold. Subsequent testing revealed the consignment was counterfeit. Christian was apprehended on August 17, 2026, at a hideout in Wamfie, within the Dormaa East District.

During interrogation, Christian allegedly admitted involvement in the transaction, which took place in Drobo, Jaman South Municipality. He identified three accomplices: Isaac Antwi, Balthazar, and a group leader known as Abraham, alias ‘Frenchman’. These three individuals remain at large.

Police investigations suggest the group may be part of a larger syndicate, as preliminary findings indicate the same group is suspected of defrauding another individual of approximately GH¢1.4 million in a separate transaction earlier this year.
