Ghana Police corporal charged with murder over student's death

General Corporal Robert Katey Koranteng of the Ghana Police Service has been charged with murder following the death of 20-year-old Central University law student Ivan Apprey Baidoo. The 34-year-old officer, who was stationed at the Traffic Management Enforcement Unit, appeared before the Adabraka District Court in Accra on September 15, 2026.

The incident occurred on August 27, 2026, during a pursuit on the Tema Motorway. According to the prosecution, Baidoo was a passenger on a Yango motorbike operated by Samuel Wesley Arthur. After the rider allegedly jumped a red light at the UPSA intersection, Koranteng pursued the vehicle. The prosecution alleges that Koranteng kicked the moving motorbike during the chase, causing the rider to lose control and crash into a concrete barrier.

Baidoo was pronounced dead on arrival at Tema General Hospital. A postmortem examination attributed his death to haemorrhagic shock caused by blunt trauma to the chest and abdomen. The prosecution further alleges that Koranteng failed to stop or provide medical assistance to the victims after the crash, leaving the scene instead.
