Ghana Police impound 700 vehicles for illegal sirens in Western Region

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service seized approximately 700 vehicles in the Western Region towns of Takoradi and Tarkwa. The operation targeted private cars equipped with unauthorized sirens, beacon lights and strobe lights that violate Regulations 65 and 74 of the 2012 Road Traffic Regulations. ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, director of Education, Research and Training at MTTD, led the clampdown, noting a surge in motorists using such devices to evade traffic jams.

Police officials warned chiefs, politicians, pastors and business leaders to stop installing prohibited emergency lighting, emphasizing that only the President, designated state officials and authorized emergency services may use sirens and beacons. The enforcement action is part of a broader nationwide campaign, with daily patrols slated to continue in the region.
