Ghana Police Impound Hundreds of Vehicles Over Illegal Sirens and Lights

The Ghana Police Service has seized roughly 700 to 800 vehicles in the Western and Central regions after detecting unauthorised sirens, strobe lights, beacon lights and improvised lamps. The two‑day operation, conducted on 17‑18 July in Sekondi‑Takoradi and Tarkwa, was led by ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng of the Western Regional Police Command and involved the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD). All illegal equipment was removed and confiscated, and drivers received warning letters and education on Road Traffic Regulations 2012 (Regulations 74 and 65 of LI 2180).

Police said the crackdown is part of a nationwide effort to curb noise pollution, improve night‑time visibility and reduce road crashes. Since the start of the campaign a month earlier, about 4,626 vehicles have been impounded. Authorities noted that chiefs, businessmen, politicians and pastors have also been caught violating the rules, while only the head of state, security agencies, the Bank of Ghana and hospitals are authorised to use sirens. Repeat offenders face prosecution, and similar enforcement exercises will be rolled out across the country.
