Ghana Police reject GH¢50k bribe during major drug bust

The Northern Regional Special Operations Team, operating under the codename ‘Red Maria’, intercepted a commercial bus traveling from Bimbilla to Tamale on October 15, 2026. During the operation, officers discovered 142 compressed parcels of suspected Indian hemp concealed within four jute sacks inside the vehicle.

Following the interception, police arrested four suspects: the driver, Alhassan Zeblim, 46; tricycle rider Ibrahim Yussif, 34; his brother Bawa Yussif, 56; and the alleged owner of the narcotics, Mohammed Haruna, 32. During the arrest, the suspects reportedly offered the officers a GH¢50,000 bribe to secure their release, which was rejected.

The suspects and the recovered exhibits, including a tricycle, have been transferred to the Regional Drug Law Enforcement Units for further investigation. The Northern Regional Police Command commended the 13-person team for their integrity and swift action.
