Ghana Police investigate ‘Ghana Jollof’ TikTok account for false news

A legal investigation is underway in Ghana regarding the TikTok account known as ‘Ghana Jollof,’ operated by Barbara Asantewaa Kodua. Police have declared Kodua wanted, alleging she published and circulated false news and content capable of causing public disorder, including claims regarding a potential coup at Jubilee House. Kodua is believed to be in the United Kingdom.

Salomey Awiti Bafoh, a senior nursing officer, has been remanded in custody following allegations that she conspired with Kodua to disseminate the material. Bafoh pleaded not guilty to abetment of crime. Prosecutors allege she acted as a liaison, helping to recruit others to redistribute the videos and managing financial transactions linked to the account.

Legal and political reactions to the case have been divided. Akwatia MP Bernard Bediako Baidoo stated the case should be viewed through the lens of intent to create fear and panic under the Criminal Offences Act, rather than as a treason case. Conversely, Kodua has characterized the arrest of Bafoh as ‘purely political persecution.’ Additionally, defense counsel for Bafoh has raised concerns regarding the accuracy of police intelligence, noting conflicting identities attributed to ‘Ghana Jollof’ in previous police charge sheets.
