Ghana police urge motorists to yield to armoured bullion vehicles

Ghana’s Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has urged motorists to exercise patience and give way to armoured bullion vehicles (ABVs) to ensure the safe transport of cash and valuables. The appeal was made during a sensitisation workshop in Accra organized by the Ministry for the Interior, which focused on new regulatory guidelines for the importation, retrofitting, use, and decommissioning of these specialised vehicles.

The new guidelines establish strict standards for construction, security, roadworthiness, crew training, and vehicle tracking. To enforce these regulations, the Ghana Police Service has formed regional and district enforcement teams to increase monitoring and inspections nationwide.

Following a directive from the Minister for the Interior, all soft-skinned cash-in-transit vehicles have been withdrawn from operations across the country. These security measures follow several armed attacks on cash-in-transit vehicles between 2021 and 2023, which resulted in the deaths of three police officers.
