Ghana political tensions rise over electoral integrity and cocoa sector management

Political tensions are rising in Ghana ahead of the 2028 general elections, with focus directed toward electoral integrity and the management of the cocoa sector.

Allegations of electoral mismanagement have been leveled against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Electoral Commission officials. Critics have pointed to past controversies involving Jean Mensa and other senior officials, citing issues such as suspicious collation exercises, disputed constituency results, and allegations of political partisanship during previous election cycles.

Simultaneously, the cocoa sector faces political scrutiny. Martin Ampim, an NPP organizer, warned that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) could lose significant support in cocoa-growing regions if the livelihoods of farmers are not protected. Concerns include cocoa pricing, payment structures, and the leadership of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD). The Young Cocoa Farmers Association has also petitioned for greater certainty and sustainability within the industry to ensure it remains viable for younger generations.
