Ken Ofori-Atta's Trial Delayed Over Service Requirements, Experts Say

Legal scholar Kwaku Ansa‑Asare advised former finance minister Ken Ofori‑Atta to return to Ghana and face the charges against him, emphasizing the constitutional presumption of innocence. He noted reports that a U.S. immigration court granted Ofori‑Atta permanent residency, underscoring the need for the former minister to submit to Ghanaian legal processes.

Policy analyst Dr. Eric Bempong cautioned against involving former vice‑president Mahamudu Bawumia in the matter, suggesting that any appeal for Ofori‑Atta’s return should be directed to former president Nana Akufo‑Addo. Meanwhile, the Office of the Special Prosecutor clarified that a trial in absentia cannot commence until the accused has been formally charged, properly served, and given proof of service.
