Ghana poultry prices expected to rise ahead of Christmas

Poultry prices in Ghana are projected to increase by at least 15 per cent ahead of the Christmas season. The Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association attributes this expected rise to the escalating costs of animal feed, specifically maize and soya, as well as higher freight charges and imported production inputs.

Industry leaders and government officials have highlighted significant disparities within the supply chain. The Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, noted that middlemen are driving up costs, citing instances where chicken purchased from farmers for GH¢80 is resold to consumers for as much as GH¢200.

Farmers are calling for government intervention to increase local production of feed ingredients to reduce reliance on expensive imports. Additionally, there are calls for the Ministry of Trade and Agribusiness to regulate the market and address excessive mark-ups by retailers, particularly in the egg market, to ensure local products remain competitive against cheaper imports.
