Ghana poultry production rises to 22% amid egg surplus
Ghana's domestic poultry production has increased significantly, rising from 4.6% to 22% within a single year. Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku attributed this growth to the government's Nkoko Nketenkete programme.
The surge has resulted in a sustained surplus of eggs in local markets, leading to increased affordability for consumers. To manage the excess supply, the Ghanaian government is exploring export opportunities to neighboring Burkina Faso. President John Dramani Mahama has directed officials to engage in trade discussions, and more than 20 trucks of eggs have already been cleared to cross the border.
In addition to exports, the government is working with the Ministry of Education to incorporate eggs into meals provided under the School Feeding Programme to help absorb the surplus and support local farmers.
