Ghana power outages prompt demands for technical reports

The Africa Sustainable Energy Centre (ASEC) is demanding a comprehensive public report regarding recent power system disturbances in Ghana. ASEC argues that simply restoring electricity is insufficient and that the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) must publish technical findings to explain why failures occur and how to prevent future disruptions.

GRIDCo has attributed a recent major outage to a fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line, which triggered automatic protection mechanisms at Akosombo and several thermal plants. ASEC is calling for a deeper investigation into whether weaknesses in infrastructure, redundancy, or operational procedures allowed a localized fault to escalate into a widespread outage.

Simultaneously, the Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, stated that the committee has not yet received the full report concerning the nationwide blackout on July 29, 2026. While GRIDCo indicated the report was submitted to the Energy Minister and ruled out sabotage, lawmakers have only seen commentaries via social media and news platforms. The committee intends to recall GRIDCo and the Energy Minister to provide clarity when Parliament reconvenes on August 24.
