Ghana and Nigeria football leagues begin new seasons
The 2026/27 football seasons have commenced in Ghana and Nigeria with significant developments in league play and administration.
In Ghana, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has called for unity and professionalism as the Ghana Premier League begins. Okraku defended his record against critics, comparing his potential legacy to that of Kwame Nkrumah. The GFA also unveiled a new list of referees, including several FIFA-level officials, to oversee the campaign. On the pitch, Vision FC secured a dominant 3-0 opening victory against Young Apostles, led by a brace from Setsofia Aqetey and an early goal from Naziru Alhassan Nyenye.
In Nigeria, Doma United maintained a perfect start to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with a 1-0 win over Inter Lagos. Rilwanu Sadiq scored the decisive goal in the 71st minute, marking Doma United's second consecutive win since their promotion. Inter Lagos remains without a point following two matches.
