Ghana Electoral Commission appoints two new Deputy Chairpersons

President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in Dr. Joseph Kwaku Asamoah and Emelia Afi Agbenyo as new Deputy Chairpersons of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC). The appointments fill vacancies following the resignation of Dr. Bossman Eric Asare and the retirement of Samuel Tettey.

During the ceremony, President Mahama emphasized the need for the Commission to remain impartial, transparent, and accountable, explicitly stating that he expects no preferential treatment for his government or the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Dr. Asamoah, a law lecturer and former EC Director of Finance, pledged to work toward restoring public trust, noting that Afrobarometer data shows confidence in the EC has fallen to 33 per cent.

The appointments have sparked significant political debate. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rejected Agbenyo’s appointment, arguing her previous role as an NDC campaign spokesperson undermines the Commission’s neutrality. Conversely, supporters and presidential staffers have defended her, stating that past political involvement does not preclude professional impartiality.
