Ghana President Mahama announces 2027 constitutional referendum

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to hold a national referendum on proposed constitutional amendments in 2027, scheduled to coincide with the District Assembly Elections. The President intends to inaugurate a Constitutional Review Implementation Committee to synthesize government positions with existing commission reports. While non-entrenched clauses will be handled through Parliamentary approval, entrenched clauses will require a referendum where at least 40 percent of registered voters must participate, with a 75 percent approval threshold required for success.

In a separate development regarding the ‘Reset Ghana’ sports agenda, Samson Deen, Chair of the National Sports Authority’s Resource Mobilisation and Partnership Committee, highlighted the proposed Constituency Games. This initiative aims to decentralize organized sport and talent identification by moving opportunities from major cities into local communities. The program is designed to create a structured pathway for athletes to progress from constituency-level competitions to regional and national stages, potentially leading to scholarships and access to sports academies.
