Ghana President Mahama announces airstrip plan for underserved regions

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a government initiative to construct airstrips in every Ghanaian region that currently lacks a commercial airport. The project aims to facilitate emergency medical evacuations and urgent air travel needs in underserved areas.

The proposed facilities will feature landing strips approximately two kilometres in length, accompanied by small control offices to manage aircraft operations during emergencies. President Mahama noted that regions already served by functioning airports will not be included in this specific construction plan.

The Western North Region, which lacks an operational commercial airport despite its significant cocoa, timber, and mineral resources, was identified as a primary beneficiary of the initiative. The announcement was made during a courtesy call by chiefs from the Western North Region.
