Ghana: President Mahama reshuffles cabinet and signs new fiscal laws
President John Dramani Mahama has implemented a series of administrative and fiscal changes in Ghana. In a recent ministerial reshuffle, Mahama Ayariga was appointed Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings was named Minister for Environment, Science and Technology. Additionally, Brogya Genfi has been reassigned from the Defence Ministry.
On the economic front, President Mahama signed three new laws—the Customs Act 2026, the Energy Sector Levies Amendment Act 2026, and the Value Added Tax Amendment Act 2026—to close revenue loopholes and strengthen fiscal discipline. These reforms include tightening fuel-tax exemptions and adjusting VAT treatment for gold mining companies.
Regarding labor and industry, Minister of State Dr. Rashid Pelpuo reported that the government successfully averted approximately 90 percent of 17 planned industrial strikes through direct negotiation. He also noted that over 400 private companies have expressed interest in participating in the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy to boost employment.
