Ghana: President Mahama addresses police welfare and galamsey
President John Dramani Mahama has undertaken several initiatives in Ghana focused on national security, police welfare, and addressing the environmental impact of illegal mining, known as galamsey. During the commissioning of an 85-bed ward complex at the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra, named after Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohunu, Mahama commended the police for reducing unresolved murders and highway robberies. To support officer welfare, he requested a GH¢300 million allocation in the 2027 budget for 250 new police apartments and announced the delivery of additional armored vehicles.
Addressing the issue of galamsey, Mahama emphasized that the government is implementing a 'New Economy Policy' to create alternative livelihoods for youth driven to illegal mining by economic hardship. He urged traditional leaders to support enforcement efforts and warned against violent confrontations during operations. This sentiment was echoed by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who warned that unemployment should not justify the destruction of water bodies and lands. Additionally, business leader Sir Sam Jonah highlighted the moral and environmental toll of illegal mining, noting that polluted rivers have become 'the colour of chocolate milk,' and cautioned that Africa must manage its resources and digital future with foresight to avoid repeating historical mistakes.
