President Mahama promotes African health investment and local manufacturing

President John Dramani Mahama is advocating for a strategic shift in African healthcare, urging leaders to treat the sector as a high-growth economic investment rather than a mere budgetary expense. Speaking at the Alamein Africa Forum, Mahama highlighted that Africa currently imports over 70 percent of its pharmaceuticals and nearly 99 percent of its vaccines, leading to significant capital flight. To address this, he unveiled the Health Investment and National Gateway Enabler (HINGE) platform, a digital tool designed to streamline drug approval and investment processes across the continent.

In Ghana, Mahama has emphasized expanding free primary healthcare, strengthening the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), and investing in medical infrastructure. This follows reports from the Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana regarding improved NHIS claim payments, which reached GH¢1.64 billion in 2026.

Additionally, the President toured the Global Mercy hospital ship docked at Tema Port. He praised the humanitarian mission for providing life-changing specialized surgeries—such as those for cataracts and cleft palates—and instructed government agencies to support the vessel’s ten-month mission, which also includes training local medical professionals.
