Ghana President Mahama Faces Opposition as Poll Shows Majority Reject Third Term

Opposition MP Alexander Afenyo‑Markin warned President John Dramani Mahama in Parliament that the electorate will not allow a third term, accusing the ruling National Democratic Congress of pursuing a hidden agenda behind the 2026 Mid‑Year Budget. He said the budget “looks good on paper” but fails ordinary Ghanaians and pledged that “you won’t have a third term, today nor tomorrow.”

A nationwide poll by Global InfoAnalytics released on 27 July 2026 found that 65 % of Ghanaian voters support Mahama’s decision not to seek a third term, while 27 % oppose it. The survey also showed a split view on calls for a third term, with 50 % rejecting and 40 % supporting such calls. The findings reinforce public confidence in Ghana’s constitutional two‑term limit and add momentum to the ongoing political debate.
