Ghana President Mahama inaugurates Independent Fiscal Council

President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a five-member Independent Fiscal Council to provide objective oversight of Ghana’s fiscal policy. The council was established to scrutinize government fiscal decisions, assess compliance with established rules, and provide recommendations aimed at improving investor confidence and promoting economic growth.

The council will serve a four-year term and is chaired by Dr. Emmanuel Oteng Kumah, an international economic consultant. Other members include former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Henry Akpenamawu Kofi Wampah, Professor Patrick Opoku Asuming from the University of Ghana Business School, Leslie Dwight Mensah representing think tanks, and J. Kweku Bedu-Addo, a former public policy expert.

President Mahama emphasized that the council’s role is critical for transparency and accountability in managing public resources. He pledged that his administration would respect the council's independence and provide the institutional support necessary for it to audit public finances, review macroeconomic assumptions, and advise on long-term debt sustainability.
