Ghana leaders and celebrities demand stronger planning, funding and demolition to curb Accra floods
Repeated heavy rains have caused severe flooding in Accra, prompting public figures to call for comprehensive action. Actor Yaw Dabo urged citizens to stop blaming the government alone, citing waste dumping in drains as a key factor and praising volunteer group Buzstop Boys while urging official support. MP Kojo Oppong Nkrumah warned that Ghana already knows technical solutions but lacks timely funding, with less than a quarter of allocated budgets released for drainage projects, desilting and dredging. Reggae artist Samini blamed poor urban planning and the approval of buildings in waterways, demanding accountability for illegal permits. Parliamentary Works and Housing Committee chairman Vincent Oppong Asamoah called for bold demolition of structures blocking natural waterways and wetlands, stressing the need for political will and investigations into land sales to developers. All stressed that without stricter enforcement of planning regulations, adequate financing, and community involvement, Accra’s flood problem will persist.
