Ghana President Mahama launches airport expansion and Bawku revitalization fund
President John Dramani Mahama has announced several major infrastructure and economic initiatives in Ghana. At the Accra International Airport, ground has been broken for a seven-storey multi-purpose car park and commercial complex. This project, which includes two hotels, retail spaces, and a pedestrian skybridge to Terminal 3, is being funded entirely through the balance sheets of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) without direct government funding.
During the airport ceremony, President Mahama also endorsed a crackdown on airport workers soliciting tips from passengers, stating the practice damages Ghana’s international reputation. He emphasized the need for professionalism and discipline within the aviation sector.
In a separate development, the President inaugurated a committee to oversee the GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund. The fund aims to restore economic activity and rebuild infrastructure in the Bawku area following years of ethnic conflict. The committee, chaired by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, will manage the disbursement of funds to support local development.
Additionally, the government has ruled out issuing Eurobonds for the next few years, opting instead to rely on domestic capital markets and potential infrastructure bonds to fund national projects.
