Ghanaian President Mahama swears in three new Supreme Court justices

President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn in three new justices to Ghana’s Supreme Court following their vetting by Parliament. The new appointees include Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko-Essah, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, and Anthony Forson Jnr, a former President of the Ghana Bar Association.

During the ceremony at Jubilee House, President Mahama emphasized that judicial independence is a protection afforded to citizens to ensure their rights are determined fairly, rather than a privilege for judges. He stressed that the authority of the Court rests on public trust and that the judiciary must remain accountable, disciplined, and adherent to the judicial oath.

The President also highlighted the need for judicial efficiency, noting that delayed justice imposes hardship on citizens. He urged the new justices to utilize technology to improve the accessibility and promptness of the legal system.

Speaking on behalf of the new appointees, Justice Bernasko-Essah pledged that the justices would discharge their duties with fairness, impartiality, and courage, treating their office as a sacred public trust and remaining faithful to the Constitution.
