Ghana President Mahama Visits Jamaica to Boost Reparations Talks and Bilateral Ties

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama arrived in Kingston on 2 August 2026 for a four‑day state visit, the first such trip in years.

The agenda centred on reparatory justice for the trans‑Atlantic slave trade, with both leaders reaffirming a joint commitment to seek reparations and to promote the UN‑adopted resolution that recognises slavery as a crime against humanity.

Economic and strategic cooperation was also discussed. The two sides identified trade, investment, education, health, culture, disaster response and defence as priority sectors. They agreed to accelerate a Bilateral Air Services Agreement that could enable direct flights between Accra and Montego Bay, and to explore maritime links to ease movement of people and goods across the Atlantic.

The visit coincided with Jamaica’s Emancipation celebrations and its 64th independence anniversary, underscoring the shared African heritage and the broader goal of deeper Africa‑Caribbean integration under the CARICOM framework.
