Ghana Proposes National School Discipline Framework After Education Conference

Professor Fatuma Nyaguthi Chege of Kenyatta University warned that selective enforcement of disciplinary rules and overcrowded classrooms are fueling indiscipline in Ghanaian schools. She called for uniform policy guidance, especially on issues such as mobile‑phone use and cyberbullying.

The two‑day National Conference on Stemming the Growing Indiscipline in Schools, convened by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu as part of the President’s Reset Agenda, concluded with a consensus to create a National School Discipline Framework. The proposed framework will define acceptable behavior, offenses, sanctions, institutional responsibilities, due‑process procedures and referral mechanisms for bullying, violence, substance abuse, sexual misconduct and exam malpractice. It also emphasizes Ghanaian values, parental accountability, teacher support and student leadership in peer mediation and restorative justice.
