Ghana proposes new regulations for commercial Okada riders

Authorities in Ghana are moving toward stricter regulations for commercial motorcycle riders, commonly known as Okada riders. Abraham Amaliba, Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), has proposed a new system that would provide commercial motorcycles with distinct registration and number plates to separate them from private users.

Under the proposed regulations, commercial riders would be required to belong to a recognized union or company to obtain registration and licensing. This information would be linked to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA). The NRSA aims to prevent private motorcycle owners from using their vehicles for commercial passenger services.

In support of stricter oversight, Solomon Akpanaba, Public Relations Officer of the Okada Riders Association, has called on authorities to establish and enforce a clear deadline for riders to obtain mandatory riding certificates. Akpanaba noted that while free training is currently available, participation remains low because many riders believe their experience makes formal certification unnecessary. He suggested that a firm ultimatum from the police regarding arrests for unlicensed riders would encourage compliance.
