Ghana Publishing Company adopts 24-hour operations to resolve overstaffing

The Ghana Publishing Company Limited (GPCL) has implemented a three-shift, 24-hour operational system to address significant overstaffing and liquidity challenges. Managing Director Nana Kwesi Boatey reported that upon assuming office in February 2025, he inherited a workforce of 250 employees, despite the company only requiring approximately 150 to function effectively.

Instead of downsizing the workforce, the state-owned company utilized the government’s 24-hour economy policy to redistribute staff across three shifts. This transition has reportedly maximized machine utilization and improved output. Key improvements include faster processing times for gazette applications, with premium requests now completed in three days compared to the previous one-week timeframe.

The expanded hours have also allowed GPCL to secure major government printing contracts, such as the national budget and the President’s State of the Nation Address.
