Ghana pushes flood management overhaul and climate resilience after deadly Accra floods
The Ghanaian government convened a stakeholder meeting in Tamale, led by Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability Baba Issifu Fuseini, to discuss practical solutions for climate resilience in the north. Participants included local authorities, environmental experts, the Director of Administration and Climate Finance Frank Aggrey, and the Ghana Meteorological Agency, focusing on climate‑smart agriculture, afforestation, sustainable charcoal production and improved land‑use planning.
Separately, the research firm Spear Institute called for a comprehensive overhaul of Ghana’s flood management system, citing the June 29, 2026 floods in Accra that killed more than 12 people, left seven missing and displaced 7,761 households across 18 assemblies. The institute highlighted weaknesses in drainage, urban planning and loss of natural flood‑control wetlands, urging coordinated prevention measures, better infrastructure and stronger community and private‑sector involvement to reduce future flood risks.
