Ghana Railway Authority warns of safety threats and illegal land deals

The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) highlighted growing safety risks on the Tema‑Mpakadan line after a passenger train struck six goats, citing ongoing encroachment, vandalism and deliberate obstruction. GRDA chief executive Frederick Appoh warned that such incidents, including stone‑throwing and people sitting on tracks, could cause serious accidents, especially as heavier freight locomotives are slated to operate on the corridor.

In a separate notice, the GRDA cautioned the public against buying or leasing railway lands and buildings without official approval. The authority said illegal transactions, allegedly conducted by former railway employees in the Western, Western North and Ashanti regions, breach the Railways Act and Public Financial Management Act. GRDA pledged legal action against unauthorised deals and urged anyone to verify transactions with the authority before proceeding.
